Yes, I've read this one a few years ago! It's an ok book, but not one of my favourites. But I wish there were more books about professional deformation.

Overall, I think, "Catch-22". Not strictly speaking "professional" deformation, but close.

Strugatsky Brother's "Monday Begins on Saturday" is also quite good in this regard.

Yep, I like them both a lot too. I also very much regretted that the film version of 22 was canceled after the first season. Where is the deformation in "Monday"?

Catch is about helplessness in objective and extreme circumstances. After the war, he also breaks down

Yeah, true, Catch-22 is about a lot of things. But this absurdity of everyone around Yossarian (including himself) is a type of derformation.

In Monday I see it as the difference between Privalov and his older colleagues. This combination of smugness, snobishness and cynicism is exceptionally common among young scientists (myself not an exception).
